Personal development, health and physical education

Personal development, health and physical education (PDHPE) is mandatory from Kindergarten to Year 10.

According to the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA), students are expected to participate in PDHPE for between 1.5 and 2.5 hours per week in Kindergarten to Year 6.

PDHPE provides students with opportunities to explore issues that are likely to impact on the health, safety and wellbeing of themselves and others – now and in the future. Students also participate in challenging and enjoyable physical activity, improving their capacity to move with skill and confidence.

Personal Development, Health and Physical Education is a big part of life here at Laguna Public School.

Every Thursday our Sports Teacher, Simone Smith, runs a PE session for the senior class and another for the junior class.  These sessions focus on fundamental motor skills and sporting skills.  We place a big emphasis on teamwork,  sportsmanship and striving to be the best you can be.

We often hold clinics that give children a first class experience in a given discipline.  We have hosted gym instructors from the Glendale Gymnasium, Aussie Rules coaches from the Sydney Swans and Olympic cyclists, to name just a few events.

Being a small school, we participate in the annual Small Schools Athletics Carnival each year with other local small schools such as Wollombi, Millfield and Paxton.  We have had many students take the next step to represent the Cessnock Zone at regional athletics carnivals.  We also take part in the Cessnock Zone Cross Country events.

We take the development of our students' swimming skills seriously, and the students participate in a 5 day intensive swim school eah year.  We have taken our students on 'Bush-to-Beach' days where they learn beach and surf safety, and the students all participate in the Zone Swimming Carnival each year.

With funding from the After School Sports Program, Simone runs After School Sports sessions each week.  Sports covered by this program have included soccer, tennis, netball and tae-kwon-do.

We expect our students to be healthy, energetic and willing to give everything a go, and our students happily respond to the many opportunities they receive.
